Baton Rouge is the state capital located in the southeastern part of the state. A French explorer gave the city its name after spotting a red stick on a bluff of the Mississippi River, which is the city’s literal meaning. Airboat tours are a great way to tour marshes and swampland around the city. The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas brings the underwater world to the surface in a beautiful building featuring several habitats. The Blue Bayou Dixie Landin’ is a water park that will provide fun for the whole family for an afternoon or entire day with slides, pools, and rides. The Global Wildlife Center is a fun place to see animals from all over the world in their own habitats. New Orleans is the largest city in the state known for Mardi Gras, Bourbon Street, the French Quarter, and many other attractions. Mardi Gras in February is a fantastic visual treat with a fun parade showcasing Louisiana culture. The French Quarter can be toured by carriage, which is the best way to learn about its history. Historic home tours are also popular because of the city’s one-of-a-kind architecture. The Audubon Insectarium showcases the world’s largest class of animals: bugs. The Louisiana Children’s Museum welcomes kids of all sizes from age one to ninety-one. The museum only has one rule though: Please Touch! Throughout the state, visitors will hear the state’s native language of French and experience fabulous remains of the French culture. The state also boasts historic sites throughout, a wonderful jazz culture, yummy Cajun and Creole cuisine, and fantastic seafood.
