HIKING VACATIONS

Hiking is a great Family Vacation activity Are you up for a family hiking vacation? Many families are choosing to get into the outdoors and experience the wonder of nature together by taking a hiking vacation.

One of the first things to consider when you plan your hiking vacation is the quality of you hiking gear. If your gear isn't up for the trip, neither are you. It is worth investing in quality hiking gear and doing some research before setting out on the trail.

Most important is a good pair of hiking boots. Many backpackers will take two pairs of hiking boots and a pair of camp shoes with them on the trail. This give your boots a chance to dry out and breathe while you are off the trail which will keep your feet dryer and more blister free. Be sure you choose the hiking boot that is right for the trail you plan to be on. In most cases soft sided light hiking boots will do. These hiking boots will not provide the ankle support of the tougher leather hiking boots, but they will not need extensive break-in time and breathe much better. If you are into mountain hiking you may want a stiffer pair of leather hiking boots.

Other hiking gear to consider are tents, camping gear and backpacks. If your hiking gear is more than a few years old, you may be missing out on some amazing new lightweight and space saving hiking gear. Backpacks are incredibly light now and hip straps make a huge difference. Your old rucksack probably isn't what you want to carry for a long trek. The longer you plan to be hiking, the more important your hiking gear becomes.

Next on the list is whether your kids are really up for a hiking vacation. Take some simple trails on weekend day trips prior to setting out on your hiking vacation. Try to get a sense of how far is fun for your family to hike together. If kids are cranky after a few miles, you won't be hiking the Appalachian Trail together this summer. Good hiking gear is just as important for your kids, so be sure to outfit them as well.

When you have a sense of what you can afford and how far you can hike and still have fun together, it is time to choose a hiking vacation destination.
