HawaiiHawaii, a very popular tropical destination in the United States, may seem a bit out of reach for some, but the trip away from the continental 48 is worth it. The Aloha State comprises hundreds of amazing islands, where you will find jungles, volcanic mountainsides, and lovely tropical cities full of Polynesian culture.

The eight main islands of Hawaii offer many excursions, but there are many more islands to be explored by kayak, toured boat trips, scuba diving, and other water activities. The main island, Hawai’i (also called the “Big Island” to avoid confusion), offers a great view of the Mauna Kea, the tallest sea mountain in the world. The Parker Ranch Historic Homes are a fun place to learn about Hawaiian cowboys where guests can horseback ride and take cattle tours across the island. Stargazing is absolutely beautiful in the clear skies of Hawaii. See the stars from the planetarium at the Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii or the Ellison S. Onizuka Center for International Astronomy at 9,300 feet atop Mauna Kea. Good evidence that the island is still growing lies at the Kilauea Visitor Center where visitors can view an active volcano.

Honolulu, the capital, is located on the third largest island, Oahu, known as the gathering place. Whether the family wants to relax on the beach, hike through forests and up mountains, go shopping in beachside towns, or find a water park to spend the day, everyone will find an excursion to enjoy on the island of Oahu. For land lovers, rainforests are a great to start exploring for waterfalls on guided eco-tours, volcanic sites can introduce visitors to the highest points in Oahu, and fruit plantations are a great way to see where bananas, pineapple, and many fruits are grown.

Also on Oahu, visitors can see the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor or the Iolani Palace, which looks back at Hawaii’s royal family. The Palace is beautifully restored to showcase the reign of King Kalakaua and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani. Visit Waikiki, the home of Duke Kahanamoku who is regarded as “the father of modern surfing.” Waikiki is the best place to get a surf lesson on the beach. Great shopping and a fun nightlife greets visitors within the city.

Visitors to Hawaii will never run out of entertainment. Whether it be which island to stay on or which beach to surf at, the choices are endless.
